My German Shepard Chasing His Tail

Question
Hello, thank you for taking your time to respond. I currently have 2 German shears that are brother and almost a year old. My one sheared is the picture perfect looking dog. However my other sheared Apollo, he is the one I am concerned about. He chases his tail constantly all day and night. At first when he did it we thought it was cute until it became a concern. He chases his tail so much that the fur is thin, not the typical German shepherd bushy tail. At the end of the tail it all raw where her bites it after he catches it. He does not have fleas or any skin problems as I have had that checked. I am just not sure what could be causing this obsession or what i can do to help him. I play outside everyday with them but after a few minutes he is back to getting his tail. He was the runt of the litter and his ears never stood up. Thank you for your time.

Answer
In canines, this is called "Canine Compulsive Disorder"; very similar to the human "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder" or OCD.

You should see your veterinarian or a veterinary behaviorist (vet that specializes in behavior) to discuss drug therapy to alleviate this condition.

Here's an article that describes the condition and presents information on what you can do at home to help:  http://www.pugauthority.com/t7758-ocd-article
