Question
Our dog is 55 lb., mixed male, 15 yes., generally ok health. I know dogs tend to sleep more with age, but is our dog sleeping too much: 9-10 hrs. overnight, one or two short naps(less than an hour), one long nap (about 2 hrs.). I know that with diminished hearing and sight they are easily bored, but are those amounts of sleep typical?

Answer
Hi Lou;
At 15, he is an old man, very old, and actually i am a little encouraged to hear that is all he sleeps.
We just lost our English Setter a couple of weeks ago. she would have been 15 in May.
For the last 2 years she has mostly laid around. she had bad arthritis, and was deaf and blind.
she slept that long at night and would take a nap for a couple of hours, be awake for a couple of hours or less, and sleep some more.
If his ealth is good, and he doesn't have a lot of painmor impbility fro Arthritis etc, then be encouraged.
It is a good ised to take him for checkups often, as their kidneys, liver and other organs can become a big problem if not watched carefully.
If he has good mobility, and not bad joints from Arthritis eyc, he sounds like you will still have him for hopefully, quite awhile.
You do have to expect to have a hard situation in the not too distant future though.
It is hard to lose them.
We become so attached to them, and they are a member of the family, and it is painful to let them go.
It is a grief, just like losing another member of the family. don't lat anyone demean your grieving because "It is just a dog".
It is NOT JUST a dg. It is a loyan and loved companion that has given you much love and comfort and joy.
Go to this website. there is a lot to read in there that will help you get ready for this, as much as we CAN ever get ready, and it will help you when you do have to face losing him.

Be sure to read The Rainbow Bridge.
It is beautiful, and it is a lot of comfort to me.
I have had a lot of dear companions I have had to lose in my lifetime, and the grief is never easier, but it helps me to read that story, and believe it.
He has been your dear friend for a long time, and i am so sorry this time is near for you.
god bless you for giving him love, a home and good care for all his l;ife.
You must have given him all these things, or he would not be in the good shape he is in for so long a life.
