Vaccination question

Question
What's your opinion on vaccinations other than the Rabies shot? And do you think they should all be given at the same time? Or should I have her vaccinated for Rabies first then go back and get the others?  I worry about too many at once and what it does to the immune system.

Answer
Vaccination schedules are very controversial. Some vets say there are always bad reactions, and we are killing more dogs that we are saving with too many vaccinations. The fanatic I use says ''Yes the standard schedule protects 75% of the dogs from parvo, but what about the other 25%?''. He has me trotting in every 2 weeks for a while, and a last one at 9 months. If the vet you use isn't too extreme, I would go along with their schedule. Any vet should be more familiar with local conditions than any website.

My vet uses a combo, DLCPP or some such.  In starting with 16 seven week old puppies, I have never had a bad reaction even with my fanatic's schedule.  In general I suggest going along with your vet unless he seems to be way out of touch with his colleagues.

My vet says the rabies shot shouldn't be given until 6 months.  Some states require it by 4 months.  They really need their parvo shot before 4-6 months.  http://www.avma.org/communications/brochures/canine_parvo/parvo_brochure.asp
gives a better explaination of how the shots work than I can.
