Large female or not?

Question
Hello, First I will start with the fact that I grew up with Dobermans and my husband with Shepherds so this is my first time owning a shepherd.  I bought from a local breeder whom was highly recommended.  We brought her home at 8 weeks and she was already 15lbs.  She is now 6 months and 63 lbs, I've heard a few things so I need the honest truth.  I've heard the larger the German shepherd the worse problems they can have? TRUE/FALSE  The breeder told me her mother topped out at 70 lbs and her sire 110...will she be bigger than the mother??? If so what type of precautions should I take to make sure she stays healthy besides the normal diet and exercise along with seeing the vet regularly?  I just lost my baby (Doberman) at 5 years of a stroke and I found the new love of my life and I couldn't handle if something were to happen to her.

Answer
It is true that the larger shepherds are more prone to bone problems etc than the smaller ones. But if you have your pup on a good LARGE breed puppy food it should be fine. Don't over exercise. No long runs or hard exercise until at least eighteen months These guys need to grow slowly and need time for their joints an ligaments to fully form Make sure she has a soft place to sleep and don't let her do a lot of jumping etc. You want to watch protein and fat levels while not skimping on the calcium. But NO VITAMINS unless she starts knuckling over (legs not being straight etc) then she will need a good calcium supplement.  Dont' feed anything with BHA or BHT in it as a preservative and stay away from by products, wheat, soy, and corn. I would say if she is 63 pounds now at six months she will be at least as big as mom and likely bigger. NO puppy food after a year old. Go to a good quality dog food at that point. We have two GSD's that are well over a hundred pounds ,both females and they are wonderful. Just watch those first two years and you'll be MUCH better off and her life span will be longer. Let me know if you need any further help or advice. ENJOY
