Question
i have a 2 y/o female in heat who is already a laid back dog except when outside, she is going into her 2nd week and was eating well and acting fine, was fine this morning then noticed a little less energy and appetite this evening but it only has been today or should i say this eveing, is this somewhat normal behavior.

Answer
Hello Melodye,
Thank you for your question.  I would first like to say that your girls behavior would need to be closely monitored by you as you are the best judge of her "norm"  I am glad to see that you have done just that!  Actually, being in her second week she very well could have a decreased appetite. Usually, at this time in her estrus she will be more excitable and receptive to the male. However, a number of additional factors can influence both her appetite and energy such as the climate, having been bred, etc.  It sounds as though you are knowledgeable in estrus signs in the bitch as you know where she is in the cycle.
First, I would make sure she is not running a temperature (the norm is 101 F - 102.5 F).  Continue watching her activity level.  If you note she has a temperature or continues with her very low energy level (which is not normal for her) I would call the vet.
I do apologize for the somewhat generic answer, however; I am sure you understand that not seeing her behavior first hand, knowing if she is out in the heat and drained, if she has been bred, or does need veterinary attention.
Should you desire additional information regarding the reproductive cycle in bitches, just let me know.
Thanks again for your question.
