Question
QUESTION: i have an 8 week old puppy american cocker spaniel and i was wondering what age it is best to start having him clipped as i was told too early can ruin his coat its best to let it grow for a few more months? i have a 3 year old already and she is clipped etc 4 weekly

ANSWER: Eight weeks is too young.  I'd let it be for a few more months.
Did you mean your 3 year old is clipped every 4 weeks?
I'd have no idea why she'd be clipped weekly.  Perhaps a typo?

QUESTION: yes sorry didnt state that very clearly my 3 year old is clipped every 4 weeks and groomed at home daily also i feed all my dogs on james wellbeloved complete i have the puppy on puppy performance and wanted to ask at what age do you reccomend changing to adult 6 months?

ANSWER: Hi Jo,
I figured it had to be a typo or else you were one "clip happy" mama ! :)

I have heard of James WellBeloved but don't know a lot about it.  You must be in the UK?

All I can say is I don't much believe in "puppy food" but lacking a website where I can take a look at it, it's hard to comment.

I just hope it's not a total kibble diet?  In my experience this leads to the notorious cocker skin problems.

QUESTION: http://www.wellbeloved.co.uk/  i use jwb complete after i had a white gsd who was a complete nutter climbing walls etc and had skin aleergies upon skin allergies when i got him tried several diff foods and jwb calmed everything down within a couple of weeks yes i am from the uk well spotted :)

Answer
Hi Jo,
I went to their site.  Very vague on what's actually in it and when I hit "ingredient? analysis"..it just says "we use good stuff" :)

I think it's probably as good as kibble can be but because of the way kibble is made it has to be at least 50% carbohydrate.  No way around that.

Cocker spaniels don't do well on such a heavy carb load.
All I can tell you is 80% of the questions I get here are about skin problems and like your gsd...some improve quickly as soon as diet changes are made.

You sound like a terrificly good owner and if you'd like to write me directly to chat about cockers and their all too common issues and how to avoid them...please do.

He's still a baby and now is the time to get knowledgeable
about this breed (and all breeds are so different).
Best wishes,
