Question
QUESTION: Hello,
After losing our 2 year old aussie to cancer, we are looking into a new dog. We would like an active, intelligent dog who is not as driven as the aussie was. The aussie required a 3 mile run in the morning, 4 ball/frisbee sessions during the day, and a 2 mile walk at night. He was also very "bossy" barky and we would like to avoid that. Can you advise? Thanks

ANSWER: I'm so sorry for your loss of such a young dog.  That must have been heartbreaking.

Certainly spaniels (cockers or springers) don't require as much activity as your Aussie.  But any dog needs at least a good hour of walking every day at a minimum.

The "bossy-barky" thing can also happen with any breed unless it's nipped in the bud immediately.  This is a training issue.

Considering what you want, I'd say a Springer would be a good choice.  Be very informed about the breeder.  Some are amazing and some are on a par with puppy mills.  NEVER buy from a pet store.

It sounds like yours will be a wonderful home for any pup. And you're right to consider which breed will be a good fit.
Best of luck,
Delores

QUESTION: How do you suggest I find a reputable breeder?

Answer
If you'll write me directly, Lisa we can do some investigating.
My email address is:  DeeBeck7765@aol.com

Would you consider going to a spaniel rescue or do you have your heart set on a puppy?  The advantages of getting a dog a bit older is you know exactly what you're getting re temperment.  It's amazing the number of fabulous dogs who've either had to be given up (owner dying, etc) or some irresponsible twit has realized the dog is a living being and couldn't be bothered with the "work" part.

But let's talk and once I know where you are I can look into breeders for you.  Or rescues :)
