Question
QUESTION: we have a cocker spaniel that is 4 year old, the vet put her on hills prescription diet w/d canine food, how good is this for weight, is there another type that is less expensive that we can get. she also has dry skin, I'm going to get some nizoral shampoo to see if this helps , the vet usually give us something to spray in food and some shampoo, but its very expensive for a small bottle.

thank you
Bobbie

ANSWER: Hill's is the worst food on the planet.  I wouldn't feed it for any reason.

But first tell me about her weight - and her skin.  Is it dry with white flakes (like dandruff)?
Does she get skin infections?

What shampoo did the vet give you?  And what were you feeding her before the Hill's?
And how much exercise does she get?  I mean - walks!

QUESTION: Hello Delores

princess weight is 39-40 lb. the vet had put her on another prescrip. food but that one made her gain weight, now they have put her on the diet one. her skin is dry with white flakes only on her back, the vet says that she has a skin allergy. the shampoo they gave us was glenhaven f1 otic 4 0z bottle. last night i mixed up some apple cider ving.and water together and rub on her and that seem to make her feel better(i did not have any wht). she gets exercise everyday, 1-2 hour walking and running.

thank you

Answer
The first thing a Vet Dermatologist would do with a cocker that's overweight and is over 3 years of age with a skin problem would be to run a thyroid test.  When did this skin problem start?

39 lbs. is totally huge for a cocker unless she's a really, really big girl.  What would her ideal weight be?

Bobbie, where are you?  If you're in the States I can recommend available things.  Both food and shampoos.

And yes, the vinegar can soothe skin.  What I'd do is mix half water & half plain white vinegar and use it as a final rinse after her bath.

I'm going to try and take a look at Glenhaven shampoo.
