Question
QUESTION: I have a 10 month old cocker spainel. For the past few months he has had loose bowel movements. He can open his bowels 10 times a day. I have tried him on a variety of food, he is currently on Wainwrigths puppy food which is making his movements slightly harder, though still runny. at times there is mucus in his bowel movement though not often

ANSWER: I don't recognize the food so am guessing you're in the UK?

Is this a dry food?  Has he seen the vet?  Is the stool just soft?
Loose?  Or is it diarreah?

Can you buy Metamucil (powder in a can) there?  Must be "no added sugar".

Have you tried a few days of scrambled egg & white rice?

How many times a day are you feeding him?

Many times puppies just need a bit more fibre so I'd like to see the ingredients in the Wainwright food.

QUESTION: Hi Delores,
Sorry, im emailing from the uk. Its a dry food that i feed him twice a day. His stools are just soft. I will try scrambled egg and rice. I have not heard of metamucil though i shall now look.
Wainwright foods is a no ceral, wheat or gluten diet, i have been trying all sorts incase he has an allergy. I have not taken him to the vet as he is growing well, putting on weight and is a very lively puppy.
Than you for your advice i will try the  above

Answer
Well, if it's just soft I'd try mixing 1/2 tsp of Metamucil (or any fibre like it) in some canned food.  What you do is mix the fibre in about 1/4 cup water and then mix into food.  You can go up to a full teaspoon but I'd start with that because it may be enough.

What Metamucil is - just psyllium so you'll probably have the equivalent product there.  Ask your druggist.

Since you're feeding dry, I'd use 1/2 can - mix the fibre into it and split it between his two meals by adding it to his kibble.

And this isn't anything to do with an allergy but the no cereal/wheat/gluten is good for other reasons.  The egg & rice idea is only for diarrhea..very easy to digest.  But that's not the problem here.

the other thing you could use is canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) - it has to be 100% pure pumpkin.  Wonderful for firming stool.
But read the label...nothing but pumpkin!  1 heaping tbsp on each meal.
