Question
Why does my 3 year old cocker spaniel growl and show his teeth when i enter the room? it is not just me he is like it with the whole family but hes worst with me. When i come home from work it is as if he doesnt recognise me all of a sudden. He is fine with the other family but not me. He gets a bit narky when he has just woken up and shows his teeth if you go near him but it seems to be all the time with me. We have been to the Vets and they have that castration wont help the situation, even though we tried the chemically castration. It has only been in the past couple of months that he has got like this. He gets nasty, it seems, for no reason. We get got the point where we just dont know what to do. I love him so much and dont want to have to get rid of him becuase of this. Is there anything i can do to get him out of this habit or get him to not do it?

Answer
Hi leah,
Let me get this straight...your vet told you NOT to neuter him?
Okay, first...you need a new vet.  This one sounds wildly incompetent.
There is "probably" something physically wrong if this suddenly appeared.  Any abrupt change in behavior is a HUGE signal.
I will just beg you to get to another vet and if you look in your phone book see if you have an AAHA Vet hospital in your area.  This means it's an actual "hospital" and not just a clinic.
This dog has a problem that needs a proper diagnosis and your vet has just blown it off because he just doesn't know what to do.
So please..please Leah...get him to someone who can help.
This isn't behavorial...this is a medical problem.
