My fussy beagle

Question
Murphy is our 2yr old Beagle. Although sometimes she can be a nice dog that sits by your lap, most of the time she can be really fussy. She's housebroken but she has attitude problems. The first thing I'll say is that she doesn't listen alot, and usually only when we have a treat or food for her. (Without food) we call her and she won't come, tell her to stop things but she doesn't listen until you physically stop her by muzzleing her or putting her into her pen. But once she has her muzzle on, she listens a whole ton more and pays attention to what we say more. You can say she calms down a whole ton. But I don't want Murphy to have the muzzle on for her to be calm. When we play with her, she gets pretty rough and starts ankle biting. I found that recently, spraying her with a spray bottle wards her off, but will it keep her off forever or am I using the right method? We see a few other beagles in the neighborhood and they seem to be very calm and polite, but I'm not sure about Murphy. She never seems to listen. During her first year, we took her to a Petsmart training course, but that really only taught her tricks rather than how to behave. Is there anything I can do to calm her down, without her muzzle on and mostly get her to listen to us more.

Answer
Beagles can be stubborn but, a 2 year old is still young. The other beagles may be a bit older. Beagles mellow with age. A spray bottle is a good training tool.
A lot of people think that sit, down and stay are cute tricks but, they are useful commands. It sounds like Murphy needs an advanced training course. You need to take Murphy to a trainer. The local spca or vet's office is a good resource to find one.
