Question
our dog is friendly but she does grab and bite or jump at face to try to bite and she jumps when people come.

Answer
Hi Pam,
At her age she is probably just playing, but must know that it is unacceptable behavior and that she is not allow to be in control or be the alpha dog.  Even if she is play biting, you must sternly say, "LEAVE IT", give her a pinch in the neck if necessary, and make her go into either the sit or down position. Teach her that if anyone gives her a treat, bone, or toy, they also have the right to take it away from her as well.  Shepherds are very smart and strong willed dogs with an amazing capability to learn quickly.  Also remember that Shepherds herd by nipping at the herd to get them to move or do something. But you must teach her that you are the Alpha dog in her pack at all times. Do not step on her back feet when she jumps as aggression begets aggression. Simply turn away or bring your knee up, not kicking her in the chest, but making space, while you give her a command. When people come for a visit, allow her to bark two or three times, then come away from the door and sit or go into the down position, to await the arrival of your guest. Unless she sits quietly and lets your guest come over to her and pet her, do not let her greet the guest. You may have to set her up by having friends help you with this part of her training, so you can reinforce it. Her reward is a nice pat from your guests and maybe even a goodie (as long as she stays in the sit or down position). Practice these things with a collar and lead at first. Sometimes even leaving a very short lead on helps. After her lessons on the lead, leave her collar and lead on, then eventually have her behave without the lead. Shower her with affection and lots of praise for a job well done.  As long as she is supervised and it is not so long that she could get caught up. Leave me some feedback and let me know how you progress with her.  Keep me posted as much as you need, I will be here to help you as much as you need it. Feedback, nominations, and follow-up questions are the only way we can gauge how we are doing. It is easy to tell at our obedience and training schools, but harder to tell online.  Looking forward to hearing about your good progress with her.  Thanks. Regards, Susan
