My 5 mo old BT peed on my boyfriend on the couch!

Question
My dog just peed on my boyfriend and all over the couch. I took him to the vet yesterday and he said nothing was wrong with him that he looked and acted very healthy. The night before and and the night before that he had been randomly yelping when we would touch his head or bump his rear end. He would then run around the living room ignoring us acting like he was pissed off with his ears back clearly not feeling well. We thought maybe it was an anal gland issue but that was fine and the doctor didn't see anything to be concerned about. I gave him yogart also cause they have sensitive stomachs and it was suggested to give them that so their stomachs can settle. THe next morning he was acting normal. But then today he peed on my boyfriend and he plays with him and licks him all over so it's not that he doesn't like him. He acted as though he did nothing wrong and of course my boyfriend is appauled by this. Could this be a urinary tract problem? Is there something I can do myself? Like give him cranberry juice? He may want to get rid of the dog after this. We've taken him to the vet 5 times since we got him three months ago. The vet couldn't give me any explanation as to what could cause him to do the butt spin or why he was yelping accept maybe he bumped himself on something and it hurt to touch it. $60 for an I haven't a clue explanation. I'm starting to feel ripped off. Is this irrational?

Answer
Hi Brandy, Didn't your vet do a urinalysis to rule out a urinary tract infection or stones? If not, that needs to be done. If it is not a physical problem, then it is most likely behavioral. Your dog may see you as his alpha dog and he may be trying to mark your boyfriend as a subordinate. You and your boyfriend (if he is a live-in) should both be your dog's alpha. Take him for frequent walks at the heel, as often as you can, but at least once a day. This will exercise his mind and body. Use a good dog deodorizer to get rid of any scent of his urine in the home. At five months, he is still young and learning. He also will require lots of exercise and training. This is the perfect age to begin his obedience training. It has nothing to do with him not liking  your boyfriend, but dominance. Your boyfriend should take him for walks, help train him, take him out frequently to relieve himself...this will help a lot. I really think that he is simply not getting enough exercise and training as he needs for his age. Boredom and authority problems show up quite frequently at this age. Be sure to call your vet and ask if he has had a urinalysis done. Leave me some feedback and keep me posted on your progress. Thank you. Regards, Susan
