Dog pushing food dish around!

Hi, I have a 8 year old Bearded Collie male (fixed at 6 months), we got him at 10 weeks.  He has a habit of pushing his dog dish around the kitchen, pushing food out of his dish - and then settling down to eat it.  Normally in the middle of the night.

We have changed brands and this did not affect the situation.  

It is not a problem - just interesting and I am looking for a reason why he would do this.

Many dogs push their food bowls around; it might be vestigial  to the dog's foraging instinct.  Many dogs also pick food out of the bowl and carry it to another location to eat it.  I suggest you pick the bowl up during the night so he does not disturb the household with the noise of his bowl.
