Question
sometimes my cat goes near the water bowl and scratches even when she isnt going to drink, why does she do this??

Answer
Brittany,

I have one that does that too. It's actually a rather common cat behavior.

There is no definite answer, but a theory is that cats have scent glands on their paws and that is a way to mark the water as theirs.

Other theories are:

Because the food bowl is too close to the water dish. Try moving the food bowl farther away.

Because they are trying to check the water level. Keep the water level consistant.

Because the water is not fresh or pure and the cat is trying to 'dig deeper' for better water. Keep purified and fresh water in the bowl.

Because it is just a harmless habit they picked up with reason or basis for it. Sometimes only a cat knows the reason why he does something.

I hope this answer helped even though there really isn't an 'answer' in this situation.
