Cat Not Covering His Poop!

Question
Hi! My question may seem odd but I was wondering what is up with my cat no longer covering his poop after he goes in the litter box. George (my male 7 month old cat) has been going to the bathroom normally in his litterbox with the same litter since day one. He has always covered his poop up with the litter after going. It almost seems like he stopped covering his business after he was neutered about a month or so ago. His litter box is always clean..I scoop it daily and their is plenty of litter. I was wondering what could have caused this change and if there is anything I can do to retrain him because it smells so bad!!! Please help! Thank You!

Answer
Michele,

George could be still upset at you for getting him neutered and that is his way of telling you. Or, right after he was neutered it may have been painful to cover his businss  and just kept the habit. And sometimes a cat does something for only a reason he knows.

Sometimes they outgrow their litterbox. They do their business and jump out so they don't step in it. I would try a bigger litterbox and deeper litter (deep litter brings out their urge to dig), and maybe a scent free litter that is relatively dust free.

I hope this helps.
