Question
Hi,

Our cat (who was a very small cat) was pregnant and I believe just gave birth. Her stomach was swollen and hard and teets were out for weeks.

Then this morning her tail and back area were covered with a bloody mess, as though she had given birth during the night. Since that time I have not been able to hear or see any trace of the kittens.

Also, she was with us for a good 3 hours this afternoon and the supposed kittens were nowhere in sight. She has definitely given birth, without a doubt, due to her drastic stomach reduction, teets being displayed, and the birthing mess on her backside, but where are the kittens? Would she leave them alone for that long? Is it possible that they are dead, and how can I find out?

Worried,

Laura

Answer
She may have miscarried, in which case, she cleaned up the mess by herself.  If she stays with you for hours at a time, it probably means there are no kittens.  She could have had a still birth.  Is this her first litter?  Does she leave you for long periods of time?  Is she an indoor cat?  If she goes outside too, there is little chance you will ever find out what happened.  I would assume that the kittens died, otherwise you would not see her for hours at at a time.  When she leaves you, you could follow her and see where she goes.  Let me know if I can be of further help.  Hugs,  Barb
