Excessive Peeing

Question
I have a part Siamese part domestic cat. He is male and has been fixed. Back awhile ago he peed on my bed when my boyfriend and I were fighting; he did it right in front of us. Then he did it a couple times after that. Now just recently he's started again now that I live at my dads. He has peed on the couch 3 times (all times I was sitting 10 feet away on the computer)and on my bed twice. I think it may be due to him needing more attention (thinking that I am ignoring him) than I give him as I am never home. Is this a possible characteristic of a cat needing attention?

Answer
Nikki,

The problem is that there are a number of different possible problems.  First of all, I would have him checked by your vet to make sure there is no medical problem with his urinary tract.

If you think it is tension on the cat's part (your fighting with your boy friend and moving in with your dad are major stress creating events), there may be a couple of things you can do.  You can invest in a Feliway diffuser for the room where the couch is (available at most pet supermarkets).  Some people are having some success with Prozac (you will have to check with your vet for dosages).

Also, you need to clean the area with an enzyme based cleaner specifically for pet stains and pet odors (available at most pet supermarkets or farm stores).

In addition, here is a link to a series of articles about inappropriate litter box habits which may have further ideas and suggestions:

Please let me know how you make out.
