Jessica, I think you gave some suggestions about a lady by the name of Wendy (under Post spay problems cats)  Anyway, My 8 mo old kitty female was spayed and the exact to the tee symptoms happened.  Major weight gain like over 1 lb a WEEK.  She has been in to see 3 diff vets, had ultrasound, exrays, blood screens, stool, even some of fat extracted make sure what it was.  But her mamatory glands also, she just looks like she came back pregnet instead of spayed, which was no chance she was pregnet prior.  So my question is she is still in this condition after 6 mo.  No vets in this area know what to do.  I've spent over thousand dollars already but I love this little kitty.  She is happy, loving, eating and drinking and energetic, but now her tummy is tender to touch, she will attack it touch it.  I am concerned about it turning into cancer, 6 mo is a long time.  I would really really like to know what happen to Wendy's kitty.  My vet is too.  symptoms were identical.  This kitty does not gorge on food.  She is small skeletal kitty (should be about 9 lbs full grown) not over 12 lbs at just a year. and only 7 lbs 6 mo ago.  No sickness behavior though.  slight temp  103 consistantly.  Been on antibiotics, anti inflamatory.  and of course low cal diet.  but not helping weight or mamatory glands.     Is there anyway you could contact her to try to figure out what the outcome was?  Maybe this is something new?

Answer
Hi Cherri,

I'm sorry, I haven't been in contact with Wendy in a long time.  The only thing I would question because of her enlarged mammary area is if the spay happened to be incomplete.  The spay process is rather blind, and sometimes some ovarian tissue is left behind.  This can cause hormone spikes that can swell the mammary area.  Sometimes a blood test can detect these hormones and tell you if a second spay needs to be performed.

I do know that some people will go ahead and have the entire mammary chain surgically removed if it feels irregular and the development of cancer is feared.  If this is something you feel strongly about, you may want to consult your vet.

In some cases, the hormonal upset that occurs when a cat is spayed can result in abnormal weight gain.  Very often, the cat's body adjusts to it and some of the excess weight is shed.  But I would suspect you have been through all of this with your vets!

I wish I could put you in touch with Wendy or she some more light, but I must say this is a problem I haven't run into often.  Best wishes to you and Chloe, she is a beautiful and very lucky girl!
