cat abcess not healing

Question
We took a stray cat to vet (18/8/08) and he diagnosed an abscess, gave injection and course of tablets. Later the same day the abscess burst and we did our best to remove all the goo and keep it clean. Although the cat has improved 100% as far as appetite is concerned, the wound is getting larger (about 1 inch by 1/2 inch) and doesn't show signs of infection. The wound is on the throat just below chin and we've noticed that he tries to scratch it which may be the cause of not healing. The area of skin around the wound seems detached and taut giving us concern that it inhibits healing.
We have read articles that say it must not be bandaged so would very much appreciate your advice ... thank you.
