Spaying a dog

Question
Hello

Does spaying carry any risks?

Answer
Having a female dog spayed carries no more risks than any other routine surgical procedure. Although having a male dog neutered is less invasive, both surgeries are preformed across the country in great numbers daily. On a personal level I have never experienced any complications occurring during the spaying procedure. The risk as with all surgies includes postoperative complications, such as infection or an internal bleed, both of which can be treated.
Your veterinarian will take all the necessary precautions to ensure that the surgery is preformed in the most sterile surrounding and safest manner. Most dogs are up on their feet within a few hours after the surgery, and are allowed to return home the next day. The risks for not having the surgery performed weigh much higher, with increasing the dog's chances of Pyometria, uterine, ovarian, and mammary cancers. Additionally, many females left unspayed will experience false pregnancies and hormonal related behavior problems. If you have specific concerns about the procedure discuss then with your regular veterinarian, as he will be happy to give you more information.  I hope this offers some helpful information. Please feel free to get back to me with any additional questions or concerns.
