Question
what type lighting fixture can i use to grow macro algae in the sump part of a aquarium, can i use the standard lighting fixture that comes with a aquarium when you first buy it or do i need a special lighting fixture

Answer
Hi Alaica,
Truly depends on the type of macro algae and the depth/size of the sump or refugium. Most, however, do require strong lighting to grow and thrive. I use a standard hood for my 29 gallon refugium with Coralife 50/50 tubes(50% actinic/50% reef sun) and get amazing growth(I regularly trim and give away Dragons Tongue and Gracilaria). In my larger(55 gallon) refugiums/sumps I use flourescent fixtures(purchased at Menards for $19.99), but run 2 of the 50/50 tubes and 2 6500 kelvin phosphorescent grow tubes as well. And the results are fantastic. Depending on the size of your tank you can probably get away with your hood fixture and just use either the 50/50 tubes or the higher kelvin phosphorescent grow tubes(at the most may have to change the ballast).
