foam in pond

Question
We have a small 160 gallon preformed pond. We just built a rock waterfall, using morter and hydraulic cement to fill the voids and to prevent water loss.  After turning on the pump and filter the pond was covered with a white foam, similar to soap.  What can we do to eliminate the foam before we put our koi in the pond?

Answer
Hi Pat,
Thanx for your question.  I've attached a link below with a recommendation for a defoamer.  I personally, only use chemicals as a very last result.  You will use your own judgment.  Basically foam is cause organically by complex compouds in the water produced by fish and plants.  You may have too many fish or it just may be a natural stabilization of the water structure in process.  At any rate, take a look at this link because I think it will help you.

thx,

Tom
