Question

Pond Weeds
Can yout ell me what kind of weed this is in the picture. Is there any way to get rid of it?
We lowered the level of the pond last fall and dug much of it up. When the sun shines on it when the pond is drained, it almost turns to dust.
Much of it has returned already this year.

Pond is about 20' x 80'. It is shaped like a figure 8. One side is about 3 feet deep the other is about 14' deep. There are about 16 rainbow trout in it. It is fed by a spring with a natural inlet and outlet.

Thank you for your help.

Answer
I'm sorry, but I cannot identify this with 100% certainty due to the image quality.  I'm sure it's nothing you did wrong, but it is hard for me to really see what's going on there.  Disclaimer aside, I would have to say that it looks Egeria densa like to me.  This particular plant doesn't use spores, pollen, or any other travelling means of reproduction.  It sprouts runners.  Because of this, once it is visibly out of the pond, it's gone.  It doesn't leave anything behind.  Unfortunately, this is the only way to truly rid the entire pond of it.  Best of luck, and p.s., other than the unsightliness it's not a bad thing to have in one's pond.
