Pond Pump inoperative after power failure

QUESTION: Hello! I just moved into a house with a pond, and the power had to be turned off for some work. After the power was turned back on, the water flow from the pump didn't resume after 1/2 hour.

I'm new to ponds, and wondering if the pump needs to be primed after a power failure, or another start up procedure is required. I checked the breaker and GFCI, and both have been reset and operating. Any suggestions?

ANSWER: What kind of pump is it??? does it sit above water or in the water?  Most above water pumps need to be primed.  Does the pump act like it wants to work or is it just silent?  It may be that the motor is burnt out which sometimes happen when the power is off and then turned back on.... let me know... dave

QUESTION: Sorry. New to this. It's a submerged pump, with a large intake box. It's working now. I didn't know how to attempt to prime it, so I took everything out, and submerged everything again to remove the air. It took a while, with very little flow at first, then building to normal.

Is this the normal way to prime a system like this? Did air enter the system through the output tube, and that's why I had to prime again?

basically... you had an air-lock going on and were able to resolve that by dismantling the system... You might be able to just put water down the intake tube next time... also check the filter box and make sure nothing in there is obstructing the flow... sometime a dirty filter pad can cause the same type of situation... dave
