QuestionHello, i have a fairly large(55gallon)tank, and i have 6 swordtail fish. 2 male and 4 female. there is one female that is pregnant and ready to deliver. my question is will she deliver all the livebearers at once or will the whole delivery take place over time and also where will the baby fry come out of
AnswerShe will, more or less, give birth to them all at the same time. The fry will, like humans, come out of the anal opening, as she is a livebearer, and gives birth to live young, not eggs. Between 1 and 60 fry will usually be produced, but do not be surprised if only a few, or even none, survive. If you want the fry to grow, remove them carefully into a separate 5 gallon tank for them to grow up in. Be quick to remove the fry or the mother will eat them.
The mother will store some of the sperm in a pouch, and around a month later, she may give birth to another batch without being near any males at all.
Wishing you the best of luck,
Kathryn
