Question
hi, i have a 29 gallon freshwater tank with a few small, colorful fish in it.(ie. guppys, platys, tetra) i was wondering what you think would be the best way to both populate and aquascape it? currently i use a few plastic plants here and there and some ornaments. your advice is apretiated!

Answer
Hi Meg,

You can buy very realistic logs, to go with your fake plants.  Logs always look nice and give a very natural look, but aquascaping is really up to the owner of the aquarium.  We each have our differing views of what is pretty and what is not.  Would you like to see one of my freshwater tanks to get ideas?  This is what I think is pretty. :)

There are a couple images there.

I recommend taller plants in the rear, graduating height-wise toward the front.   Raising soil in the rear, keeps debris in front, where you can siphon it out when you do your weekly/bi-weekly tank water changes and cleanings.

I do advise cleaning water every two weeks.  It makes the tank much healthier, as it does for the fish. :)

Happy fish-keeping.  Write anytime.
