I have a yellow chichlid. the other day, i found him with what looked like bruises on one of his sides. i also noticed that he had pushed all the gravel from one corner, and made a poile. i do water changes each week, and his appetite has been normal. why would he push gravel all to one side? there are rocks for him to hide in, but he did this behavior. thanks!
Answer -
Hi Ron,

He is making a spawning area.  Are there other fish in the tank?

Answer
Hi Ron,
If there are no other options, some cichlids will try to breed with another cichlid even if the other cichlid is not the same species.  They can mate and produce offspring but this is not a good thing because the offspring are hybrids.  I suggest you look into getting a female yellow cichlid (I suspect you have a fish called an electric yellow, Labidochromis caeruleus).
