Question
QUESTION: Hi, my pony is in a smaller field for a while to lose some weight, but there is another horse in their that stands by the gate and when my pony comes over he chases him off and tries to bite him, sometimes i cant even push him back to get in the gate , I'm scared that if he attacks my pony while im holding him we will both get hurt , i really dont want to move him at the moment and dont know what to do about it

ANSWER: Hi Carol

There are three ways to do this. One is to move your pony, something you don't want to do. The second way is to ask this horses owner to come with you and see what his/her horse is like when you try to catch your boy, then he/she will realise that the hrose is a bully, and may remove him/her from the field without any problem.

The 3rd solution is to get together the horses owner, and the Yard Manager/Yard owner and let them see what goes on, then sit down and try to discuss a plan of action.

Or, my way would be to firmly go towards the horse, saying 'BACK' in a firm voice, and just push him away from the gate.  If he goes to chase your pony, shout or growl, LOUDLY, and distract him away from his target.  Flick the end of your leadrope at him if you need to....just make it known that you aren't going to stand for his bad behaviour.

I hope you can sort this out, and your pony can go back in a bigger field away from this bully soon.

If there is anything else I can help with, please do ask me.

QUESTION: Hi thanks Emma , the horse wasnt there this evening so i am hoping that he has been taken out , my pony was able to walk happily over to me without the bully , so fingers crossed he wont be in there tomorrow , my i just ask as its been a while since i owned a horse , i notice his nostrils were a bit wet  when i was taking him back to the field is this normal or a cause for concern

Answer
It's perfectly normal Carol...my mare has a bit of a runny nose at this time of year.  It's nothing to worry about, and according to my vet, is something to do with the natural drainage process.

I hope your problem has been sorted out now.
