Question
I got a registered quarter horse for Christmas,he is five and beautiful. He is in a snaffle bit and tends to rear his head up and jump his front feet of the ground and rear up if he is directed away from the other horse. He is well broke but does not like to be alone.  I am told he has been extensively trail ridden by kids. My brother in law says it is the bit? He has gotten better about this since I got him but hates to be alone. He will even run to catch up with the other horse if it gets too far ahead and he hates to be in front when riding,he wants to follow, he gets nervous if he can't see the horse.
Mind you I have only had him a week.
Also when he goes to gallop he bucks out when he starts running usually just once, but it sends my son flying. Is there anything to do to stop this?
He also has the left front hoof split all the way down. Apparently this has always been this way. I am putting a hoof cream on. Is there something else I should do or check? He is dearly loved and I just want the best for him. Thanks vick

Answer
Hello Vicky,
You are right it seems he doesn't like to be alone.  You said that he was broke, he might need some more training like steering etc.  He is also five, which is a young age.  When he acts like what you described reassure him.  He is used to being a trail horse so he will do whats normal for him.  You however should do what you want, not what he wants, but remember to be patient with him because he is learning.  You also said he is getting better, and for a week that is very good.  I would just continue to teach him like you are doing.  As for the bit, horses do respond differently when they have a bit change.  I think that a snaffle would be best for him.  A snaffle is not as severe.  If you were to change from a snaffle to a more severe bit, this could cause more damage than good.  I hope this helps, email back if you have any more questions.
Congrats on your new horse, I hope it works out!
