bone growth excessive

Question
i have a five year old horse that for one shakes its head the vet has stated that he has an alergey which has resulted in an infection in the sinus. this i can understand but the bigger problem is that he is developing boney growths on his head. he now has three one in the centre between his eyes another as you look at him slightly to the left of that and the third in front right eye. his eye is weeping and it seems to be obscuring his vision. the vet has said these will vanish over a few months but i am not to sure. they are the size of half a walnut but the one in front of his eye is bigger. he has no pain in them. they do not give when you put pressure on and when tapped on they sound like bone. have you any ideas

Answer
Hi Nicki;

Get a second opinion.  If they are indeed bony growths, they aren't going anywhere, but likely going to get bigger.

They could be internal sarcoids, tumors, pockets of abcessing and somehow related to the sinus infection and headshaking and not bone growths at all.

I've not heard of a disease or problem where the horse gets bony growths on the head and I can't find anything in any of my vet texts.

See if you can't locate a specialist in the field of allergies and/or respiratory disorders and the like.

I've not seen it done, but it might be possible to have his head ultrasounded or x-rayed so a better look can be seen of the growths.

Best of luck!

Sincerely,

Lana Reinhardt
