Standardbreds in Italy.

Question
I've read that all harness racing in Europe is for trotters, no pacers. Are the horses from  American Standardbred lines? What are they called? Also, I came to know a wonderful riding horse in Mallorca, Spain who was a pacer. I was told he had quite a racing career in Italy. Given that they only race trotters and, I assume, only breed for that gait, I thought it curious that this horse would be a pacer. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Elaine.
Great Britain (United Kingdom) races pacers only. The majority of Europe races trotters only. There are many Standardbred lines in America. There are Maternal lines, and also Tail Male lines. American Standardbreds are found in increasing numbers in European pedigrees. Several years ago, France opened their stud book to horses that were not entirely French bred, and one of their most successful sires is an American bred stallion named Workaholic. Many people use the terms "pacer" and "trotter" interchangeably when they are referring to Standardbreds but it is a grievous error. If the horse had a racing career in Italy, he was definitely NOT a pacer. Also in many of the big races in Europe (suck as the Prix d'Amerique) geldings are not allowed to compete.
May I be nosey and ask what sparked your interest in Standardbreds? They are truly a wonderful breed, and very versatile when their racing days are over. Did you happen to see the riderless horse at Ronald Reagan's funeral? He is a retired Standardbred pacer. Here is his story:

One of Europe's biggest races---the Elitelopp was raced on Sunday. Here's a link to watch the race:

Elaine,
If you can get the lip tattoo or freeze brand number off that riding horse in Mallorca, I can probably find out who he is and his breeding.
