Transporting Yellow-Bellied Slider

Question
We are moving from FL to CA and want to bring our yellow-bellied slider with us.  We are driving.  What is the best way we can handle such a long trip.  He's about 6 inches and is now housed in a 30 gallon tank with a hollow log, plants, filter system, and warming lamp.  He's our special pet and love him very much.  I'm afraid he's going to die on our trip if we put him in a bucket.  We'd appreciate any advise.  Thank you!

Answer
How long is the trip? If only a few days, keep it in a medium-sized plastic tub, like a small Rubbermaid tub, with some stuff on the bottom to keep it pleasantly warm and damp (towels, paper towels, shredded newspaper, etc.)

The trick is to keep it in the right temp range- about 70-85F. I'd stick in a cheap thermometer.

Don't worry that it cannot move a lot- in fact, the less it can move, the less stressful it is.

If the trip will last longer than a couple days, then you'll want to let it soak, hunt/eat, and swim every night. Another cheapo tub can be used to make an easy to set-up and clean travel tank. (Feed very lightly while traveling.)

When you get to the new home, keep him in this travel system until the new tank is up and running at the right temps, etc. When you put it back in, feed lightly and leave it alone for a few days to help it unstress.
