Question
I sent you a email just over a month ago and thanks for your reply.  My yellow foot tortoise still hisses when picked up and hasn't improved any within the month.  Is this still normal and do you think it will ever get away from this.  Also it isn't as active as my friends tortoise tho its a greek tortoise and is also a lot more friendly.  When I lift mine out and set it down it dosn't move about where hers runs across the floor.  Am I expecting to much from it.  Your advise again would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
A tortoise that hisses when picked up is pretty normal- the hissing is just the noise it makes when it quickly pulls its head in- it is not a sign of anger or irritation or anything- although they don't pull their heads in quickly when they are happy.

Comparing a large, quiet, shy species from the depths of the dark rainforest to a small, inquisitive species from the hot Mediterranean is not going to work- way too different.

However, if it is getting the temps, lighting, humidity, diet, humidity, and humidity it needs, it should be fine.

I don't recall the earlier letter, but give http://www.tortoisetrust.org http://www.tortoiseforum.org and http://www.redfoots.com a try for good info.
