Question

Sore eye
I have a dutch rabbit that plays inside and outside.  I have noticed lately that she has really dry skin around the outer part of her eye.  It just started on the other eye yesterday.  She is scratching it I believe because today there was a little bloody spot where that dry skin is.  What can I do to get rid of it?

Answer
Dear Jenifer,

Your bunny has an early case of mange.  This is caused by parasitic mites, and can be safely treated with Revolution (selamectin) from your rabbit vet.  You can find a rabbit vet here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

DO NOT use Frontline, which is deadly to rabbits.

You can read more about this condition (with before and after pictures) here:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/furloss.html

to see what can happen if this condition is not treated.  It's itchy and miserable, so please get your bunny to a good vet ASAP for treatment.  Do not waste your time or money on over-the-counter treatments.  They will not work, and they will just extend your bunny's suffering.

Hope this helps!

Dana
