wolf teeth or first canines

Question
my mini potbellied pig just had babies last night and now the babies seem to be hurting her when they nurse. i know in normal pigs we cut the wolf teeth at 1 day old. is this something that needs to be done with potbellies as well? if so do i just use side cutters like my normal pigs or should i use something else?

Answer
Pot-bellied pigs are born with 8 teeth - the 3rd incisors and the canine teeth. They are sharp and sometimes called needle teeth. They are soft at first, but quickly become brittle.

Normally, pot-bellied pigs do not need these teeth trimmed. I do not recommend that the average pet owner try to trim them. If you've done this with other pigs before, and have sharp cutters in good condition, and the piglets are under a day old, then it would probably be safe for you to trim them, if you wish. Carefully trim just the tip, stay well above the gum.

If this is your sows first litter, she's probably uncomfortable but she'll quickly adjust to nursing.
