Question
QUESTION: hi sandra
following your reply to a question about marbocyl, I am experiencing problems with the dosage , our rat weighs 400g ,is male and is 7 months old.He will not accept baytril syrup and we cannot obtain tablets hence the switch to marbocyl combined with doxycycline. I have been informed by the vet to administer 5mg once daily but a website gives the dose as 2mg per kg body weight. Can you help us with dosages please.
He is very active eats very well ,but does sneeze slight porphyrin, he has adjusted to the head tilt , which we were informed would be unlikely to dissapear.
we are in the uk
any help with ongoing re-hab dosages would also be appreciated
many thanks    steve

ANSWER: Hi Steve

Sorry for the delay, with it being Easter weekend I have been a bit busy. I must say, there are alot of people that are having rattie troubles, I have 14 messages in my inbox!  Yikes!!!!!! I know what I am going to be doing tonight...putting on my thinking cap and trying to help everyone best I can.

We dont use marbocyl here in the states, but I do know it is in the fame group of compounds called Fluoroquinolones, that baytril is in.
Where did you find that dose at that says to give 2mg per kg body weight?  Can you direct me to that website?

If I go by the normal baytril dose, for a rat that weight, he should get
.20 ccs for a high end dose.  Sometimes we start them out with a start up dose that is higher than their usual stabilization dose would be, starting the rat at say, .30 and after that, .15 twice a day for 21 to 30 days.  So I would say for a rat that size, between .15 and .20 ccs sounds right to me.

Again though if you can direct me to that other website you have I would appreciate it.

thanks

SAndra

The dose should be .20 ccs once daily.

QUESTION: hi sandrai
I googled marbofloxacin/marbocyl to find the the dosage, but since then i've gone to www.cavyrescue.co.uk and found an excellent article on respiratory infections in rats , they give dosages for all of the common used drugs
thanks   steve

Answer
Oh awesome...I think I will bookmark that site too!!  Thanks!

REVISED

I am sorry we do not use the same medication in the UK as we do in the US.

Just for kicks I went to the cavy site and there are several drugs that are not approved for use in the US with Marbofloxacin being one of them.

I dont think its fair you judge my expertise on the fact I am unfamiliar with a drug that is not dispensed in the states.

Regards

Sandra
