My rattie and her upper Respiratory Infection

Question

Bola!
Hi there... My boyfriend and I have had our rattie "Bola" for about a year in a half now....
About 6 months ago, she got REALLY sick, so we had to rush her to the hospital and the Vet told us she had a really bad upper respiratory infection, so they put her on meds and she was doing REALLY good, considering they told us she would have about a month or two to live...
Well, 6 months later, she is still lovin life, but now her infection is kicking up out of know where...
She is starting to wheeze a lot, really hard for her to breathe at times, she is just getting worse and worse and she isnt getting younger.... My boyfriend and I have been talking and he asked me if it might be time to put her down, if she is suffering! I'm not sure what to do...
Do you think its time?

Answer
Hi Meghan

No, I do not think it is time.  I only believe its time to let a rat go when all options have been exhausted.  She got better, and she can pull through this too with the right medication and help and also with my advice.  Once she gets stable, she must remain on medication the rest of her life to keep from relapse.  She has mycoplasmosis and when she flares up each time it is worse than the other infection.  This is why now that it is starting to happen again, she should be put on the medications needed to help her recover, namely baytril and amoxil. She must also be given albuterol and steroids. She ideally should be kept in an oxygenated tank at the vets office for a day or two while the meds start to help her and this way she will be comfortable. The vet can also nebulize the medication into the tank so she will breathe them eds in and this gets it to her lungs  faster.  Note her feet please and let me know if they are blue or purple. This indicates if she is getting sufficient oxygen.

What meds has she been on in the past?  IS the vet an exotic vet or just a regular vet that sees exotics?
