Question
my rat is about 1 yr old and she was the smallest out the litter recently her breathing has become very poor and when she sneezes and coughs there is blood. She eats fine but is losing a bit of weight, she has scabs on her back so we treated her for mites, thinking this could be irritating her breathing but it doesnt  seemed to have helped, she lives with two other rats but they rarely fight and are all tame.should she see a vet, is there something i can do to help, and are there any illnesses i should be aware of? thank you

Answer
Please refer to my website, sandyscrittercity.com and read up on the most common rat ailments. You   asked if there are illnesses that you should be aware of which makes me believe that you are not up to par on common rat ailments such as mycoplasmosis.  You also are not aware what porphyrin is (dont feel bad, many rat owners do not know) and unless you seek advice on rat care you may never know. Porphyrin is what you see when the rat sneezes that resembles blood. It comes out of their nose and eyes as well and it is produced by a gland located behind their  eyes. Trace amounts are normal in some rats and other rats never have it unless they are sick. Please also refer to that topic on my site too, which is  under the title as "Red blood from eyes and nose"   I did not title it PORPHYRIN because if your looking up why your rats nose is bleeding, seeing the word porphyrin will mean nothing to you!  I made my website years ago with the new rat owner in mind and regressed back to the days when I first owned rats and all the things I did NOT know and learned along the way, often learning from mistakes, which were made sadly at the expense of the rats.  My goal is to spare new rat owners from making the same mistakes, although to err is human, but with the internet full of accurate and not so accurate information, there is alot to learn about rat care.  My site is easy to follow and from the response I get from readers, they are finding answers  to tons of questions they have never been able to find answers for, such as answers to things like: Why does my rat sway her head from side to side or what does my rat grind her teeth and make her eyes vibrate in their sockets real fast at the same time?  Many medical questions are answered too, from weight loss to heart disease and of course the very important info on proper diet and how to keep your rat healthy by offering the right foods. Many rat owners think they are supposed to feed their rat the seed mixes pet stores sell, but this is the worst food you can use due to the high protein and fat content. Rats need no more than  15% protein daily or it can be taxing on their kidneys       causing immature kidney disease.  The list gooes on  and on!  So anyhow please refer to my site for more info and let me know after your done if you have found anything that may describe what your rat is doing.
As for a Vet, we will take it from the follow up if she needs a vet, but I am thinking YES. I will find you one. Where are you located?
