Mouse sneezing and vibrating

Question
Hi,
I have recently bought two mice, about 3 weeks ago. 2 weeks
ago i noticed one of them sneezing and vibrating so i
changed her bedding from sawdust to j-cloth and tissues.
The sneezing has seemed to reduce but today she was
sneezing more and when you hold her you can feel her
vibrating after she sneezes. The other mouse however seems
absolutely fine.
Many thanks!

Answer
Dear Chrissy,

There might be other environmental causes for sneezing, such as air freshener near the cage.  If there doesn't seem to be an allergic cause, then your mouse probably has a respiratory infection.  The best thing to do is take her to the vet, because there she can be diagnosed and treated with the most modern medicines.

I understand that mice are often a low budget pet, so if you can't take her to the vet, there are home remedies for such illnesses.  I use an antibiotic called Tetracycline, which is actually available in the FISH section of the pet store.  I explain how to use it in the following post:

I should have told the person in this case to treat her other mouse too.  You don't need to put the antibiotic directly in her mouth, but she should drink from the antibiotic water too.

If she doesn't get better in a day or two, she should go to the vet.  Again, if she can't, treat her again.  I had a stubborn case recently where I had to treat her three times, every other day.  Now little Brandy is fine.  However, if I could have, I would have taken her to the vet.  Now you know my mice are low budget pets too!

After a mouse has recovered from a respiratory infection, often her 'voice' is lower.  Mice chatter much of the time, but in such a high frequency that we can't hear it.  You may be able to hear her chatter from now on.  It's nothing to worry about and I find it rather endearing to know when she is talking to me.

squeaks,
