baby mice in sink

Question
Yesterday, I found a baby field mouse in my unused utility sink in the middle of a storage room (sink is 4 feet above the floor and no counter around it. Not sure how it got in). I picked it up and set it free.  3 days later, I found 3 more baby mice, each one bigger than the other in the sink. I also set them free. Could there be more than 1 mother? How far apart are mice born ?(minutes, hours etc)

Answer
Dear William,

Perhaps they are getting in through the drain hole? Try stopping it up if it is open.  A litter of mice is born within about an hour. There can be size differences within a litter- the runt can be quite small.  Certainly there could be more than one mother. Mice living together sometimes raise their litters together.

Good luck with your mystery!
