Can I put pet mouse in with tame wild mouse?

Question
About a year ago we found a mouse in our house-- actually our cat found it and had it cornered in our bathtub. The mouse was fine and we have kept it. The mouse is pretty sweet, she loves to run in her wheel and she seems like any other domestic mouse. But lately she seems almost lonely-- she's been alot less social then she used to and I was wondering if perhaps she would enjoy the company of another. But if that where to happen would she and a fancy mouse get along or would they fight? And I know there is the possibility of disease but she is perfectly healthy. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Dear Sara,

People have kept wild mice with pet store/bred mice very well. Definitely try it. However, be ready to buy a second mouse for the mate if there is trouble and she needs her own cage.

When you introduce them, do it in a completely clean cage that doesn't smell like anybody. No toys except the wheel. Put REAL vanilla on their rumps and necks. Watch carefully. All sorts of chasing and squeaking is fine. This is what is not fine:

1. blood
2. depression, lethargy
3. someone is blocked from wheel, nest, food, or water.

The chasing and squeaking will probably subside within a couple of weeks.

Let me know how it goes. I am curious and would like to add another success story-- or learn a lesson.

squeaks n giggles,

Natasha
