Ill Gerbil? Depressed Gerbil?

Question
I have 2 problems, we have 3 male gerbils which are 2 years old. We separated 1 of them off about 2 months ago because of fighting and recently he's not been eating. He eats sunflower seeds when we hold him and not as much as used to in the cage. What should we do?
Also recently one of our gerbils has had green poo. What should we do?

Answer
Hello Emily,

Has he totally stopped eating? 2years old is classed as old age in a gerbil, and so it is natural for them to sleep more, and start eating a lot less!! If he really isn't eating i would recommend taking him to the vets for a quick check up! Also if you are worried you could try offering him baby food! They seem to really like it and it is good for them too. It is Cow and Cate Sunshine Bananna (powder form mixed with water to make a paste)! This is available from all big stores, and it is the human variety!
It maybe that he is stressed from being split and feeling a bit lonely, although that is only a possibility!

Hmmm, the poo question is a hard one. Are you feeding them lots of greens? Sometimes pellets in animal food can cause the poo to change colour, although you would expect to see an effect in all the gerbils. If you are feeding any veg or fruit maybe stop that and see if it makes any difference! If not, again i would recommend a trip to the vets just to be on the safe side!

I hope i have helped you,
Thank you,
Charlie.
