Question
I have a 5yr old German Shepard and we just moved to the mountains.  My
dog has been having her first interactions with deer on the other side of our
chain link fence, which is only about 5ft tall.  We have had only one sign of
aggresion from the deer towads the dog, but I am afraid of the deer jumping
the fence.  Should I try to scare the deer away or do you think it will stay out
of the yard?
I'm afraid of my dog getting hurt, even though she is about 75lbs and very
territorial.      Thank You, Leslie

Answer
I think that once your dog has her scent over the area, the deer will stay on their own side of the fence. However, I would be concerned that it might not be tall enough to keep the dog in. My fear would be that the dog would jump the fence to chase the deer and become lost. Careful supervision and boundary training should prevent this. And make sure she's tagged and/or microchipped just in case. After awhile she and the deer will learn to ignore each other.
