How do you stop a German Shepard from digging up the yard?

Answer
I was thrilled when I read the instruction book that came with my Lab that it wasn't to dig holes in the yard.  Later I discovered their solution was not to leave it outside unsupervised.  I have yet to see a workable solution to this common problem. I have read many books and been around Q&A sites like this for years.  My yard looks like no man's land.   Sorry!
