Question
QUESTION: I have a female german shepherd that is constantly nipping and also tends to bite and I cant seem to find a way to stop it.  She is very oral.  Constantly chewing up things.  I have given her plenty of chew toys and this continues.  We have 2 small children and she is grabbing the leg of our oldest son and he screams out of fear.  She isnt drawing blood but is scratching him.  I had a german shepherd before this one and it was a wonderful dog and had none of these problems.  I worry she is going to hurt someone as I cant control the issue and it is becoming a huge problem.....Please HELP

ANSWER: Dogs' personalities vary within a breed.  You may also be remembering a dog when it was older and comparing it to a much younger one.  They will do less as they age.  However, even very young puppies can be trained not to bite.  It takes consistency and persistence.  Each and every time she puts her teeth on anybody, they must yell ouch and withdraw.  It will work, and children can be taught to do it.  It won't happen quickly.  The longer she has been allowed to do it, and the more often she isn't corrected, the longer it will take.  You, the childen, and any visitors must show a zero tolerance for it.  Anytime she puts her teeth on a person, she must lose their attention.

QUESTION: Other than yelling ouch and withdrawing are there any other techniques or items used to eliminate this behavior.  She is doing this as you walk around the yard not just if you are playing with her

Answer
You must be very careful not to give her the attention she is seeking when she bites.  Biting is one way dogs entice others to play with them.  Take a big chomp on the other dog and run away.  It then chases you.  You must not give a positive response.
