QuestionHi there Ann!
I have a quick question.
My 12 year old rescue Collie cross is molting.
Is it normal for an old dog of this age to molt so badly? every time I touch her handfulls of coat comes out, but leaves no bold patches so I am not too worried.
Is this an age thing? I am in England so it is going into spring here, I understand animals naturally molt at this time of year.
Any suggestions on how to prevent the loss of so much hair?
Thank you!!
AnswerMost Border Collies have a thick coat of hair that is designed to withstand the colder weather of Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Molting is common among Border Collies and collies in general and will normally occur after winter or, if female, after having pups. Although I am not a vet, my Border Collies used to shed their coats in major clumps also, especially after having pups. Frequent brushing is usually recommended.
In my experience, dogs kept inside the home typically shed less then dogs kept outside or in a barn.
