border collie not eating

Question
I have a ten month old female border collie who has been losing weight and only will eat chicken and rice, not any of her real puppy food.  She will go days without eating anything, so i finally started cooking chicken and rice for her.  I took her to the vet to see if there was anything wrong, but she checked out just fine.  I am giving her heartworm medication, but should i be giving her any other worming medicine?  I don't know if that is the problem, but i am worried about her getting too thin.  It seems to me that she should be gaining in her first year, not losing.  I would appreciate if you would offer any suggestions.  Thank you

Answer
Susan,
First of all, have your vet check for digestive problems. If your dog drools excessively that is one thing to look for.  If that's ruled out it may be that your dog has learned to be a picky eater or the food you were feeding isn't edible to your dog.  I don't know what food you were feeding but if she will eat a healthy natural diet chicken, rice and vegetables are good for your dog. You might look at the BARF (Bones and Raw Food diet). Also research pet food ingredients - there's a wealth of information on the net that is valuable.  Once your dog is wormed and she vet checks worm free that isn't likely the problem.
