Question
What's the difference between a border collie, and a collie?

Answer
Hello Matt,

The most obvious difference between a Border Collie and a Collie is their looks.  Do a Google image search for Border Collies and then Collies, Shelties or Standard Collies.

Secondly, the Border Collie was developed to herd livestock in such a manner that it's ability to fetch is prized among all other herding breeds.  This unique ability to fetch livestock as it's primary instinct has proven time and time again that Border Collies are ideal for farmers and ranchers everywhere.  Border Collies also work quietly.  They do not typically bark at the livestock when moving them from place to place.  Instead, their power to move livestock comes from their "eye".  This simply means that they are capable of staring down a stubborn animal to get them moving again.

Collies, on the other hand, have been bred for looks so much so over the years that many of them have lost their natural ability to herd.  When observing a Collie herd livestock, it is quite obvious that there is an extreme difference between the instincts of a Collie vs. Border Collie.  A Collie will tend to look a little more aloof when trying to herd.  This simply means that they appear to need more guidance from their master in knowing what to do.  They are also not as quick in reacting to the herd of livestock and often times loose contact with the herd, leaving it open to scattering and loss of control.  Collies are also a lot more fragile and have less strength in herding a group of animals.

These are the obvious differences that I've seen at clinics and dog shows where I've actually witnessed both breeds herd livestock.  There are more including health related issues and personality traits but that should give you some idea.

Thank you for your question.
