Stop Jumping The Fence & Making Friends

Question
Hi, we have just adopted a 4 year old male (desexed) cocker spaniel and also have a 7 month old female cocker spaniel which we've had since she was 12 weeks. Both dogs are really lovely and we wanted to get the second dog as companion for our puppy. The adopted dog has been very well cared for, except his previous owners work 10 hour days and the dog has been able to get out of the back yard (despite a chicken wire fence), make friends with other dogs in the street and spent most of the day running free and as a consequence he is very strong and boisterous. We have a secure fence and are at home most of the day, however we have noticed that he can jump up on outside furniture and possibly jump the fence as he's very strong. This is a concern as we don't want him to escape or teach our puppy to escape either. How can we "calm" him and teach him not to try jump and run away to play down the street. Also our puppy is in awe of the new dog but the new dog doesn't take much notice of the puppy. How can we encourage a friendship between the two. I really appreciate your time in answering. Many thanks.

Answer
He's not getting enough exercise.  But first - move anything away from the fence :) if he's that good a jumper.  Go out with them..toss a ball..keep them occupied.

This boy (actually both your dogs) need a daily hour long walk.  If you have access to a fenced in doggie park, that would be ideal.  A tired dog is a good dog!

Don't worry about the new dog & your pup - most adults don't take too much notice of puppies but they'll develop their own relationship as time goes on.  Walking them together will help that process along...and it'll also bond the new dog to you.
